Today’s New Mexico State Capitol, known as the Roundhouse, is the only round capitol building in the country. It was built by Robert E. McKee with a design by W.C. Kruger that combined elements of New Mexico Territorial style, Pueblo adobe architecture and Greek Revival adaptations.

The New Mexico State Capitol building is it the only round state capitol in the United States (also known informally as “the Roundhouse”). On a trip to Albuquerque, NM to see the annual Balloon Fiesta we added in an extra couple of days to check out Santa Fe.
The building was designed to resemble the Zia Sun Symbol when viewed from above, with four entrance wings that protrude from the main cylindrical volume. Architecturally, the Capitol is a blend of New Mexico Territorial Revival style and neoclassical influences. Above each entrance is a stone carving of the State Seal of New Mexico.
