The read data is only transferred to the on-board controller, not to the host PC. The caveat here being is that some manufacturers testing programs do not print full test results and allow a certain number of bad sectors saying only if they pass or not. Manufacturer programs, however, are generally quicker than badblocks sometimes a fair amount so.0
SMART Extended Self Test on a new Hard Disk. Hard disk – Hitachi 7200 RPM, 1 TB. Drive Status – Nothing installed, except Windows 7, drivers and Dell SupportAssist. Extended tests usually take up a lot of time as the program scans the drive sector by sector. If it keeps going and it’s not frozen or anything, don’t worry about it for now.
Defrag and balance don’t read every sector (neither does a file system test). One difference – the SMART test covers the OS partition, and the scrub does not. I run all the tests once/quarter. I don’t see a need to do extended SMART tests and/or scrubs more often than that.
The criteria for the extended self-test are the same as the short self-test with two exceptions: segment (3) of the extended self-test shall be a read/verify scan of all of the user data area, and there is no maximum time limit for the drive to perform the test.
The drive firmware runs the tests.
